This 90 minute session is a mix of information sharing, a large and small group exercises and Q&A time with the goal to increase our understanding of the personal, professional and systemic challenges to inclusivity based on equity and honest engagement. The session will serve as only the beginning for more learning and practice towards increasing equity, engagement and inclusion with the focus on marginalize populations.
Sherwood Smith, Ed.D. works at the University of Vermont (UVM). Since summer 2014 as Senior Executive Director for the Vice President of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) which includes: Center for Cultural Pluralism, The Mosaic Center for Students of Color, The Interfaith Center, The Prism Center, and Women & Gender Equity Center at UVM. As a faculty member (2002-2021) with an appointment in the College of Education and Social Services, Department of Leadership & Developmental Sciences he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses. Through the Center for Cultural Pluralism, serving as director for the past 17 years he coordinates and provides professional development for faculty and staff on issues of cultural and social justice.
Sherwood is a Co-Founder & Partner of CQ Strategies, LLC (www.cqstrategies.org), a collective of 5 partners providing training and consulting services on cultural competency, implicit bias, and organizational change. CQ Strategies has worked with more than 65 organizations, colleges, and city departments since 2010, many through the “We All Belong” program of the City of Burlington Community & Economic Development Office. Sherwood consults individually focusing on equity, inclusion, intercultural communication in general and higher education curriculum & climate diversity issues. Sherwood has spoken on Vermont Public Radio and WCAX Television, co-edited two books and several book chapters, and been a presenter at many national conferences.
In addition, he has been faculty with the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication (SIIC) in Portland, Oregon (2000- 2018) and the Winter Institute for Intercultural Communication (WIIC) in 2017 at the UMASS Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. Sherwood served as a Peace Corps Fisheries Volunteer in Tanzania, Director for the School for International Training’s Program in Kenya and Assistant Director for Residence Life at Penn State University Campus in State College, Pennsylvania. He has visited 20 countries and most recently was a guest speaker at University of Inner Mongolia and Jufu Normal University in China (2012).
