Why Join VTAJ ?
VTAJ is a dynamic organization designed to assist its members in growing professionally by offering networking, information sharing and education that contribute to practice growth, thus increasing every member’s level of professional success. VTAJ continues to sponsor, support or oppose legislation to best serve the administration of justice and the cause of advocacy.

Membership in the VTAJ is open to all attorneys, law students and law clerks who meet are engaged in any field or phase of advocacy and who are committed to the concept of fair trial, the advocacy system, and a just result for the injured, the accused
and those whose rights are jeopardized.

Eligibility Certification: Any lawyer licensed to practice before the Vermont Supreme Court, being of good moral character, engaged in any field or phase of advocacy and committed to the concept of fair trial, the advocacy system and a just result for the injured, the accused and those whose rights are jeopardized, is eligible for membership in the VTAJ. Provided, however, that no person shall be eligible for membership or continue membership who regularly or consistently represents the defense in personal injury or workers compensation matters, or who is affiliated with a firm which regularly or consistently represents the defense in such matters. “Regularly or consistently” means in excess of 10% of an individual or firm’s personal injury or workers compensation representation, measured by any one or more of the following factors: percentage of gross receipts, time spent, number of matters, or number of clients represented during the past calendar year.

Membership Services and Benefits
 

Continuing Legal Education - VTAJ provides quality CLE Seminars targeted to give practicing trial attorneys better tools in the fight to protect their clients, while building trial skills and increasing case development knowledge. Members may attend CLE’s at reduced rates. NOTE:  Upon joining, new members receive a certificate to attend one VTAJ CLE seminar for FREE during their first year of membership.

Case Strategy Consulting Panel Services – Free to members, and providing 1 – 2 hours of strategy consulting about your case with some of VTAJ’s most experienced lawyers.

Listservs – Network with some of the most experienced and successful trial lawyers in the state who share trial tactics and tips via an email members-only listserv forum. Listservs include: General Listserv; Family Law Listserv; Employment Law Listserv; Criminal Law Listserv; Workers Comp Listserv

Online Membership Directory – Annual online directory containing searchable alphabetical, geographical and “fields of practice” listings of all VTAJ members, located on the VTAJ website. This online directory has a “Find a Lawyer” tool for both members, non-member attorney colleagues and for the general public.

TrialSmith – Provides VTAJ members access to over 450,000 depositions in the nation’s largest deposition database, the ability to download briefs, motions and other court documents, to find cases in which an expert was challenged, access to Fastcase National Case Law Library, and access to the JurySmith Juror Research tool..

Moranco, Inc.  –   Through its sponsor affiliation with Moranco, Inc., a company that specializes in Lawyers Practice Liability Insurance, every VTAJ member can be provided with a NO obligation premium estimate for Professional Liability insurance. In most cases, Moranco is able to find substantial savings for their clients. 

Quarterly News Journal - All members receive the online quarterly, VTAJ Report, which contains verdicts and settlements reports, current events in the legal profession, legislative reports, reviews of recent court decisions, and other news relevant to trial lawyers. Members are invited to submit case reports, articles, commentaries and networking items, at any time, for publication.

Legislative & Public Affairs - VTAJ’s  Legislative Committee members assist VTAJ’s registered lobbyists in efforts to promote laws and regulations that advance public good through the civil justice system. To that end, VTAJ works to promote understanding and goodwill with Vermont state legislators and members of the U.S. Congress.

Political Action Committee - VTAJ’s non-partisan political action committee, Vermont Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, supports legislative candidates who adhere to VTAJ’s philosophy of the protection of consumers’ rights and ethical practice of trial law.

AAJ Affiliation - VTAJ also coordinates projects and protects the trial bar’s legislative interests in cooperation with the American Association for Justice.
